NCLEX Exam

Overview
To enable you to work in the USA as a nurse you must first sit and pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). This examination can be taken in London, right across the USA and in a selection of locations worldwide.

Eligibility Requirements
Each US State has a Board of Nursing. To take the NCLEX examination candidates must meet all of the eligibility requirements set by the relevant State Board of Nursing and you must have qualified from an RGN training programme which has covered Medical, Surgical, Obstetrics, Paediatrics and Psychiatry, both clinical and theory.

There are significant benefits to registering with Stateside as we are constantly updated with all the different State Board requirements. We can therefore advise you which Board of Nursing best suits your individual needs.

Taking the NCLEX
You can take the NCLEX exam in a Pearson VUE test centre in the United Kingdom (central London). There are also test centres in the following countries

The NCLEX exam is administered by Computerised Adaptive Testing (CAT) which chooses test items based on your previous answer. The computer will "adapt" to your response, correct or incorrect, by selecting harder or easier items for the next question. In this way you are given the best opportunity to demonstrate your competency.

Questions in the NCLEX exam are nearly all of multiple choice format. They are presented one at a time on a computer screen. You can view each question for as long as you like but you cannot go back once you have recorded your answer, nor can you leave a question unanswered.

The test could take anywhere between 2 and 6 hours to complete.

When you sit the examination you will be required to present two valid forms of identification, one of which must be your (valid) passport. As a security measure you will also have your photograph and fingerprints taken.

Test Content
The test is based on two components; the nursing process and the patient’s needs. The percentages of questions relating to these are as follows:

  Safe and Effective Care Environment
Coordinated Care 12-18%
Safety and Infection Control 8-14%
Health Promotion and Maintenance 7-13%
Psychosocial Integrity 8-14%

  Physiological Integrity
Basic Care and Comfort 11-17%
Pharmacological Therapies 9-15%
Reduction of Risk Potential 10-16%
Physiological Adaptation 11-17%

How to Get Your Exam Results
Although the examination is scored as the candidate completes each item, no results are released at the test center. Examination results are available only from the boards of nursing and will be mailed to candidates approximately one month after taking the examination. You can also get “unofficial” results within two business days through the quick results service available on the NCLEX Candidate Web site or by calling 1-900-776-2539. Note that quick results are not available in all states and there is a fee for this service.
