Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the whole process take?
As a general rule, if a nurse does not have the NCLEX or CGFNS exam, the process can take up to 18 months or more. If a nurse has passed either of these exams then the process can be slightly speeded up, assuming there are no immigration obstacles.
Do I need to wait for my Authorisation to Test before I start to study for the NCLEX exam?
Under no circumstances should you delay starting to study until you have your Authorisation to Test (ATT)! Make sure you are thoroughly prepared for the exam before you book it. We recommend you begin studying as soon as you decide to relocate to the USA.
If I apply for a Texas License do I have to sit the exam in Texas?
You can choose to sit the exam in the USA, London or any other approved test centre regardless of which license you have applied for. If you decide to sit it in the USA you may need to apply for a tourist visa in order to be able to enter the USA to take the exam. As the examination is now held in London we cannot assist you in your application for a tourist visa.
How long does it take before I get my exam results?
The Pearson VUE test centre will transmit your results electronically to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Your State Board of Nursing will notify you of the results in approximately 4 weeks. Some State Boards offer on-line results facilities which are generally available after 3 working days following your exam.
If I have passed the NCLEX and hold a license from one state, but wish to work in a different state what do I do?
It is possible to endorse your license to a different State if necessary. This means that you are able to obtain a license from one State and work in another as all licences are transferable to other states. You will need to apply for a Licensure by Endorsement Application Form from the State you wish to transfer to. It should then just be a matter of completing the application form and having your original license verified. Depending on the State you may need to apply for a CES report. Every State has their own criteria so we would advise you to contact us to discuss your specific requirements.
What if I fail the NCLEX Exam?
The pass rate is very good and even if you fail you can generally retake the exam after 45 days.
How do I obtain a Green Card to work in the USA?
To obtain a Green Card you must have accepted a job offer from a USA hospital or facility. The hospital must provide you with an offer letter, which must state your job title, salary and hours to be worked. Once you have this and the attorney has obtained other required data from your US employer then they can file for your Green Card. (Please note: Green Cards will only be issued if you have a CGFNS or NCLEX pass.)
Do I have to pay for my Green Card?
Most of our client hospitals pay for the attorney costs for applying for the nurse’s Green Card. However, you are responsible for the costs incurred at the US embassy once you have your Approval Notice. This will involve both a final filing fee and medical fee for each person petitioned for.
Once I have my Green Card when can I go to USA?
When you are in possession of your Green Card you can leave the next day if you wish. You will need to enter the US and commence work with a period of 6 months of obtaining the green card otherwise the green card will lapse. |
